  Comportamenti cancerogeni
Voi impotenti a subire. Questo si può chiamare "furto di stato" in piena regola. Il tutto sotto il nostro silenzio. Ne avete sentito parlare di questa notizia? Gaza è alla fame ed è sull'orlo del collasso, ma tutti se ne frecano.

Israeli troops raid branch of Jordan National Bank among number of financial institutions, seize 1.5m in cash from West Bank cities, town

By Omar Karmi

RAMALLAH — A branch of the Jordan National Bank was among a number of financial institutions targeted by Israeli troops in a pre-dawn raid yesterday that ended with the Israeli army seizing over $1.5 million in cash from several West Bank towns and cities.

A total of 24 banks and money exchange shops were targeted in the raid that was carried out simultaneously in Jenin, Tulkarem, Nablus and Ramallah. An Israeli army spokesperson said a total of six million Israeli shekels ($1.4 million) and JD170,000 were taken in the operation.

The army said the operation targeted "Palestinian financial infrastructure financing terrorism" and was carried out by the army in cooperation with the Shin Bet internal security service and Israeli police.

According to Palestinian sources, one civilian was injured during exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Palestinian gunmen in Nablus, where a branch of the Jordan National Bank was apparently targeted by mistake.

Khalil Nasr, general manager for the international division at the Jordan National Bank in Amman, told AFP that Israeli forces stormed the two-storey Nablus branch, destroying furniture, using explosives and confiscating the "main server" but no cash.

The Israeli West Bank military governor had said the bank was not meant to be targeted and promised to return the server, Nasr said.

"The Israeli military governor has spoken to our manager in Palestine and apologised over the incident... and that they will return our main server," Nasr said.

The Israeli military governor told bank officials that the raid targeted money exchange shops in the area, particularly one located across the street from the Jordan National Bank.

It is not the first time, the Israeli army has seized cash from Palestinian financial institutions, and, as before, the army yesterday claimed that the money seized had originated from Syria and was intended for Hamas or Islamic Jihad. According to Palestinians, the raids amount to nothing more than simple bank robbery.

The timing also seems a little unfortunate, coming a day after Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni promised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that Israel was prepared to release millions of dollars in tax revenue it owes the PA but has retained after Hamas came to power.

In Amman, the Foreign Ministry said it dispatched a physician to examine the health of Jordanian prisoners in Israel, particualry Sultan Ajlouni, who suffers a chronic infection in the intestine he developed in prison, where he has been held for 15 years, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The raid came on the same day that Abbas and US President George W. Bush met for the first time since 2005 in New York on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly session.

The two leaders gave a short press conference after their meeting, but answered no questions.

Abbas urged the US to support the Palestinian people.

"The Palestinian people desire peace, and there is no power on earth that can prevent the Palestinian people from moving towards the peaceful solution and living and coexisting in peace," he said. Turning to Bush, Abbas added: "We are in dire need of your help and support."

Bush tried to boost Abbas, calling him "a man of peace".

"I fully understand that in order to achieve this vision there must be leaders willing to speak out and act on behalf of people who yearn for peace," Bush said, addressing Abbas. "And you are such a leader, Mr President."

The UN Security Council plans an open meeting today that is intended to revive the peace process.

In his talk to the UN General Assembly Tuesday, Bush had said: "I'm optimistic that by supporting the forces of democracy and moderation, we can help Israelis and Palestinians build a more hopeful future and achieve the peace in a Holy Land we all want."

He challenged Hamas to reject the armed resistance, recognise Israel and honour previously signed agreements between Israel and the PA.

Hamas has rejected the three key international demands. The international community remains adamant that for as long as Hamas does so, it will continue with the sanctions against the PA that has left more than 160,000 PA employees largely unpaid for the past six months.

The UN estimates that if the sanctions continue, two-thirds of Palestinians will end the year living under the internationally agreed poverty line of less than $2 a day.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East voiced its strong support Wednesday for efforts by Abbas to form a national unity government with Hamas.

A meeting of top officials from the Quartet — the United States, European Union, Russia and United Nations — also renewed temporary emergency financial aid for the Palestinian territories for three months.

"The Quartet welcomed the efforts of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to form a government of national unity, in the hope that the platform of such a government would reflect Quartet principles and allow for early engagement," the group said in a statement according to AFP.

The United States, in particular, has made it clear to Abbas in meetings this week that it would not be ready to deal with any Palestinian Cabinet that does not accept the Quartet conditions.

"We agreed that you cannot have peace if you do not recognise the right of your partner to exist, that is a key to negotiations," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said after the meeting.

The Quartet also "endorsed the continuation and expansion of the Temporary International Mechanism", to provide financial aid to the Palestinians, for another three months.

The mechanism was set up to channel desperately needed aid into the Palestinian territories after a virtual international blockade was imposed.

Elsewhere, a missile from an Israeli aircraft killed a Palestinian in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday, local residents and the Israeli military said.

Gaza residents said the man was a member of Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, an armed offshoot of Fateh. Another Palestinian was wounded in the strike.

An Israeli army spokesman said the man was trying to remove launchers that were used earlier to fire two makeshift rockets into Israel.

An Israeli was wounded by one of the two rockets fired from the Beit Lahiya area in the north of the Gaza Strip, an army spokesman said.

More than 210 Palestinians, about half of them civilians, have been killed in Gaza in the last three months.
